Horseradish

Lemony SnicketI love Lemony Snicket. No really, I love him.

Yesterday, I found a book of his at the library called ‘Horseradish‘.
It is a book full of  ‘bitter truths you can’t avoid’. It is my kind of book.

Quotes include:

Arguing with somebody is never pleasant, but sometimes it is useful and necessary to do so.

The expression ‘Those who can’t do, teach’ is a curious one, because if you look at the world, you’ll see that teachers aren’t particularly worse at doing things than anyone else, so perhaps the expression might better be worded as ‘Nobody can do anything.’

Most schools have a system of loud bells, which startle the students and teachers at regular intervals and remind them that time is passing even more slowly than it seems.

Deciding whether or not to trust a person is like deciding whether or not to climb a tree, because you might get a wonderful view from the highest branch, or you might simply get covered in sap, and for this reason many people choose to spend their time alone indoors, where it’s harder to get a splinter.

Love can change a person the way a parent can change a baby – awkwardly, and often with a great deal of mess.

Lemony Snicket (and no, that’s not his real name) uses his very dry sense of humor along with a touch of sarcasm and rather a lot of morbidity in all his writing. It’s very comforting to read a book that embraces that fact that life can be hard. Even if it often involves Lachrymose Leeches and evil Counts who’s life goal is to kill and steal from three very lovely orphans.

A strange word

The Book Thief

People observe the colours of a day only at it’s beginnings and ends, but to me it’s quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different colours. Waxy yellows, cloud-spat blues. Murky darknesses. In my line of work, I make it a point to notice them.”

    The Book Thief, Markus Zusak

You must read this book. The story is told from the perspective of death. Which does sound morbid and weird, but trust me, it’s a fascinating, funny and magical (sounds stupid, but meh) read.
